Food, Booze and Reviews

I am back from holiday and as much as I wish I could say that it is good to be back that would be a bloody massive lie, so I won’t. Whilst I was away I am sure that the food world kept turning and lots of exciting new stuff occurred. Now that I am back it is time to write another little news update for you about the stuff going on in my little corner of the food world.

Laine Brew Co Launch

Last night saw the launch party for the new range of beers from London/Brighton brewery Laine Brew Co. Their new brewery, situated just outside Brighton in the South Downs, heralds the next step for this relatively new brewery upping their production to 65HL which is about 40,000 pints a week to you and me. The new range of beers features both cask and keg offerings which is great to see, plus bottled and canned beers as well.

Head Brewer Nic Donald, said: “We’ve combined classic British styles with a craft beer sensibility. Expect beers that are full of flavour and exciting to the senses, but which retain drinkability. The beers take their inspiration from a combination of the stories, spirit and good times associated with Laine’s pubs,” continued Hibberd, “so design and taste are bright, fun and off-the-wall”.

There will also be a beer lab based in Hackney where they will be developing experimental small batch beers that will push the boundaries beyond the standard range. This means that drinkers can come to expect the unexpected (impossible) from the new Laine Brew Co.

They are also celebrating Octoberfest this Saturday at the North Laine Brewhouse in Brighton where they will be launching a new wheat beer called Weiss Weiss Baby. Live music, candy floss, schnapps, pretzels and surely some lederhosen should all appear in abundance.

Trolldoner Launch @The Druids Arms

Having conquered the Burger world it is time for the Troll to turn its attention to kebabs. Most people will be aware of the Troll’s Pantry burger brand in Brighton that has been serving up organic burgers to the patrons of The Street Diner and Hobgoblin pub for the past few years. Owner Paul Clark has now decided it is the time of the doner kebab to get the Troll treatment so expect organic meats, homemade sauces and a whole hogget of other surprises.

The Trolldoner launch takes place on Saturday the 8th October at The Druids Arms pub in Brighton. Head down for a taste of ethically sourced doners, shawarmas, shish and wraps made using homemade flat breads and seasonal sauces. They will then be available from Wednesday to Saturday at the pub for at least the next 6 months. For fans of Paul’s burgers do not despair these are still available from the new Trollburger shack. Keep an eye out on twitter for updates.

Wildcat Whisky Glenfarclas tasting

This one is a little way off but best to get the date in your diaries now as tickets will sell out. Brighton whisky experts Wildcat Whisky will be hosting a special tasting event at Hotel Du Vin in Brighton with legendary distillery Glenfarclas. Matthew Porritt of Glenfarclas will be guiding you through five of his favourite Glenfarclas expressions and will be on hand to discuss all things whisky. Having attended a Wildcat tasting before I can assure you that it will be a great event full of lots of information and interesting whisky facts. Add to this the fantastic surroundings of Hotel Du Vin Brighton and this is sure to be an afternoon well spent.
